#Nostalgia ‘Shadowplayers’ and the Stone Roses
TJ Chambers

… Formed in 1981, and operating initially as The Patrol, early Stone Roses were based around a core of Ian Brown, John Squire and Andy Couzens, who offered a rockist amalgam of punk, mod, goth and The Alarm, wrapping this unappealing package in a selection of bandanas, silk shirts and leather trousers. By 1985 the Roses were being managed by a committee of disaffected Factory alumni, from which Tony Wilson instinctively recoiled. ‘The Stone Roses, I hated. I’d seen them from when they were a goth band and badly dressed. By the time they started spreading their names all over Manchester they were managed by my ex-wife Lindsay Reade, my ex-business partner Martin Hannett, my ex-protégé from The Haçienda Tim Chambers, and the guy who used to run The Haçienda, Howard Jones. Everyone who was an ex in my life was involved with the Roses, so I completely ignored them.’
